We have extended our time to place our remaining animals until September 20th. Please visit our animal page to see which species are still available. No appointments are necessary during the times listed on our calendar! We are closed the last weekend in August as I’ve had a death in the family and must return home. We will be open Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Thank you for your continued support as we work to place all of our remaining critters!
Our calendar has been updated to show the days and times available for volunteering and adoptions through the end of August. There is no need to make an appointment. Thank you for your continued support during this time as we prepare to close.
It is with a broken heart, that I announce the closing of Apple Wood Rescue. This is a decision that I have battled with for quite some time now and unfortunately the time has come to admit my defeat. During my recent medical emergency and my subsequent week spent in the hospital, many issues have come to light. Issues that I cannot fix. Issues with loved ones, with myself, and with the sustainability of what I hoped would be a great small animal revolution… if you will. Sadly, the last 6 years seem to have done nothing to better the lives of those I sought out to help. All I’ve done is put strain on myself, my loved ones, those who have tried to help me and those I care about most: the animals. I will continue to fight and advocate on behalf of all animals, maybe in time volunteer with other organizations. But what is clear now, is my inability to run this shelter while also meeting all other obligations in my life. Those of you who know me well, know that I do not admit defeat easily… nor without many, many tears. This is for the best even if it feels like my heart is being ripped out of my chest.
I will continue to work and find homes for those in the shelter’s care over the next couple months, but I will not be taking in any more animals. Our current lease on our building space is up at the end of August and I plan to be cleared out by then.
I also want to give a very large, love filled “Thank you!” to everyone who has supported Apple Wood and it’s mission to help the small exotic animals in and around Denver. Whether through donations, time, money, or tears spent… those who’ve adopted, who’ve transported, who’ve cared… those who’ve tried to help me make a difference for the one’s often forgotten. I appreciate everything you all have done for me and most importantly, for the animals.
I am forever in your debt,
Founder & Executive Director
